VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - The 111-year-old Tate Cemetery is getting cleaned up.
Equipment and employees for Quality Cut Lawn Service LLC have been working in the old black cemetery in Vicksburg, cutting and removing vegetation and small trees that have hidden tombstones and markers for several years.
Sherry Fisher, whose grandfathers are buried there, says she appreciates the effort.
The Vicksburg Post reports the one-acre private cemetery's condition has been a problem for previous administrations that wanted to clean it because city officials could not locate the heirs of the original owners to notify them of intent to do so.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen, however, was able to get a bill passed that gave the city the authority to cut the grass as needed.
