BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A lawsuit that says heat conditions on death row are unsafe for inmates was filed during Louisiana's hot and humid summer. The federal judge assigned to the case suggested he would rule quickly because of the health concerns involved. But summer's heat has given way to the cool of fall, and the three condemned inmates who are plaintiffs in the case still await a ruling, four months after the trial.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - A 33-year-old Baton Rouge man has been convicted in the 2009 arson-related death of his grandfather. Dustin Musso was convicted Friday of first-degree murder in by a Baton Rouge Parish jury. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
MONROE, La. (AP) - A 51-year-old Winnsboro woman has been given more than three years in prison for lying on loan applications to get money to hide the theft of $640,000 from a federally funded nonprofit. Donna Jean Remides pleaded guilty to the charge in June.
GRETNA, La. (AP) - The Jefferson Parish Council will hold two public meetings before scheduling a vote on which of three companies will take over operation of the parish's two public hospitals. Residents will have an opportunity to comment on proposals for the future of West Jefferson Medical Center and East Jefferson General Hospital.
