LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - McNeese State University Athletic Director Bruce Hemphill says McNeese's plans for building an on-campus basketball arena are "moving forward quickly." He says the school has secured financing for the project and signed contracts with a local architect.

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - A program in Lafayette is helping 150 Louisiana teachers learn how to bring the rigor of advanced placement education to their students. The Lafayette Parish School System and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are hosting an Advanced Placement Summer Institute for middle and high school teachers. The institute began July 14 and continues through this week.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Shreveport police are investigating a death in the city's Highland neighborhood. Police got a call early today about a possible shooting.

PRAIRIEVILLE, La. (AP) - The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office says a recently retired deputy has drowned trying to rescue his Yorkshire terrier. A sheriff's spokeswoman says a neighbor came to see why the dog was barking yesterday morning and found Lt. Sam Vitter's shoes and keys at the edge of Spanish Oaks Pond in Prairieville.
