JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The head of Mississippi's Democratic Party says he has advised the party's nominee to quit the 1st District congressional race because exaggeration of his military service has cost him support. Rickey Cole tells The Clarion-Ledger that he told Ron Dickey he thinks Dickey will have a hard time focusing his campaign on veterans' and mental health issues.

ETHEL, Miss. (AP) - Attala County authorities say arson is suspected in a fire that damaged a commercial building in Ethel. Firefighters say they found a table burning near the building's front door. They say the fire was spreading to the main structure. The investigation is being handled by the Mississippi state fire marshal's office.

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) - The group behind Inspire Charter School plans to ask the state for approval to open the proposed charter school in Columbus. The group was denied a charter for the school in June by the Mississippi Charter School Authorizer Board. It has until Aug. 15 to file a notice.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The University of Mississippi is trying to promote racial diversity and provide context for Old South symbols. Chancellor Dan Jones says two campus streets will be renamed and plaques could be installed to provide historical context for symbols.
