SPRINGDALE, Ark. (AP) - The Northwest Regional Planning Commission says unincorporated areas of Benton and Washington counties haven't grown as much as the cities and the counties face losing millions of dollars in tax money as a result.
Sales tax revenue is distributed among cities and counties based on the populations of the cities and of the county.
Officials say the results of the 2010 census as projected would cost Benton County about $2.8 million and Washington County $1.9 million.
The projection forecasts Washington County's rural population to drop from 37,201 to 35,142 with Benton County's falling from 42,718 to 40,861.
